The Artsy Kootenays
The Artsy Kootenays I just got back from a whirlwind tour of the Kootenays to visit my Grandma in Nelson. I love the drive up through the Okanagan, even though the wildlife was scarce, but my favorite part of heading to Nelson has to be the overabundance of creatives. Because the region has long been home to the Kootenay School of the Arts, it attracts fantastic artisans from all over BC and Canada. We drove up to Proctor and went to the Bakery in the old schoolhouse, where my Grandma taught back in the early 1950s. The building was about to be torn down, but the community rallied and the building is now home to the library, an eco council and a bakery that makes the best cinnamon buns I’ve ever tasted. While there we met three lovely ladies: a librarian, a potter and a retired nurse. Their stories and perspective on community was incredible, and it turns out that one of the teachers my Grandma knew when she worked there...
